Plett Ocean Festival: Dive into Plettenberg Bay’s Marine Celebration – why you shouldn’t miss the Plett Ocean Festival this winter. So here’s the vibe: imagine the summer dust just starting to settle, sandy cossies packed away, the last ice-cream licked, and the sun dipping a little lower over our stunning slice of coastline. But before the winter blues even have a chance to creep in, Plett does what Plett does best — we turn the tide. And in true local style, we crank things back up with one of the coolest (literally and figuratively) events of the year: The Plett Ocean Festival.

Now in its fourth year, this isn’t just a festival — it’s a whole mood. It’s where science, community, ocean love, and proper good times come together on the shores of one of the most beautiful coastal towns in South Africa. Think of it as summer’s spirited little sibling, turning July into something to look forward to.

Here’s what makes it unmissable:

It’s All About Ocean Aweh-ness

Whether you’re a barefoot beachcomber, an aspiring marine biologist, or someone who just loves a good rock pool ramble, there’s something here for you. From fascinating excursions and workshops to ocean-inspired art sessions, this festival turns every curious kid and adult into a citizen scientist for a few magical days.

The festival is wrapped around the Marine Science Symposium at the iconic Beacon Island Resort — but don’t let the academic title put you off. These aren’t your average lectures. Picture passionate experts turning marine mysteries into digestible, mind-blowing moments — the kind that leave you saying, “Wait, what?!” (in a good way).

This year, sharks, whales, dolphins, seahorses, seals — yep, all the ocean celebrities — are on the agenda. Get the latest scoop on the rabies outbreak affecting our Cape fur seal population, hear about groundbreaking shark research, and learn how the locals are stepping up to protect our beaches, birds, and marine biodiversity with real purpose.

Black Mermaids, Tiny Scientists & Big Dreams

For the young ones, the Ocean Aweh-ness Kids Club is back, making learning fun, messy, and memorable. Meanwhile, the incredible Black Mermaid Foundation teams up with Adopt-a-Swimmer to offer educational underwater workshops for local kids — many of whom are diving into the ocean for the first time. It’s more than just a swim; it’s a glimpse into a bigger, brighter future.

Surf’s Up at the Wedge Classic

No Plett festival is complete without a bit of salty competition. The Wedge Classic Surf & Bodyboarding Contest is coming in hot (despite the cool temps) from 7 – 12 July at Hobie Beach. Grab a front-row patch of sand and watch as local legends and up-and-coming wave warriors pull off epic moves, from double rollos to head-turning front flips — and yes, some wipeouts that’ll have you wincing and cheering all at once.

Cosy Vibes & Community Feels

This festival isn’t just about science and surf. It’s about people. Warm welcomes, vibey coffee shops, delicious eats, and a town that leans into winter with open arms. There’s something truly special about this season in Plett — the air is crisp, the crowds are gone, and you get to experience the town like a local. As Plett Tourism CEO Patty Butterworth puts it: “There is something magical about Plett in the winter.”

So, will we see you there?

Whether you’re keen to learn, explore, surf, snorkel, or just sip a flat white while watching whales breach in the bay, the Plett Ocean Festival is calling. It’s bold, it’s brainy, it’s beautifully wild — and you’re invited.
