Nestled in the heart of the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn pulses with events throughout the year – from arts and culture to sport, food, and community celebration.
Each March/April, the Little Karoo National Arts Festival / Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) transforms Oudtshoorn into South Africa’s largest Afrikaans arts festival. Visitors enjoy theatre, music, visual arts, cabaret, comedy, and literature across hundreds of shows over eight lively days.
Come mid-June to late July, the Greater Oudtshoorn Sports Festival lights up the town with bowls, rugby, darts, cycling, indigenous games, stock cars, and even cheerleading championships. Organized with strong support from the municipal council, it showcases sporting pride and builds community unity.
Winter brings Klein Karoo Klassique (early August), a refined celebration of live classical music, visual art, and literary discussions, with family-friendly concerts and local wine tastings in beautifully curated settings.
Other key events include the Optimum Meiringspoort Half Marathon every October: from scenic trail runs to full marathon-distance runs in the gorge landscape. And the adventurous Rhodes Dryland Traverse, traversing between Cango Caves and the snow‑edged Swartberg peaks in late October to early November.
Local favourites round out the calendar: the Calitzdorp Expressed wine‑and‑food festival in June, Dust 4 Glory obstacle‑course challenges in October, and vibrant parkruns and weekly sport fixtures at reserved city venues like the Rolbalklub and De Jager Sports Complex.
Why it’s worth visiting

- Beautiful surroundings: most events are nestled near the Swartberg or Outeniqua Mountains or framed by the iconic ostrich farms and Cango Caves.
- Local flavour: community-driven, locally rooted events showcasing culture, history, cuisine, and Karoo character.
Plan your trip around one – or several – of these annual highlights, and experience Oudtshoorn as more than a stop on the map: it’s a festival of life in the Klein Karoo.
