A Train That Defined the Garden Route

For generations, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe wasn’t just a steam train — it was the heartbeat of the Garden Route. The 67 km coastal stretch between George and Knysna was transformed into a slow, romantic journey. Travelers would cross lagoons, hug cliffs, wind through fynbos valleys, and feel the sea breeze as the steam whistle echoed across the hills.

I remember going on the train back in the 1990’s (giving away my age here, haha) and hearing the classic ‘choo-choo’ sound as it would set off on it’s daily trip from Knysna to George every day at 10…

Though the line was built in 1928 initially for freight and transport, it evolved into a heritage experience beloved by locals and international visitors. In its prime, it hosted over 110,000 passengers annually, many drawn by the romance of steam, the dramatic views, and the slow-pace escape it offered.

“Each bend revealed a new highlight — lagoon, forest, ocean — always beautiful, always surprising.”

But natural disaster and neglect brought the line to a halt in the mid-2000s.

The Collapse: Floods, Decline, and Silence

Heavy floods in 2006 wreaked havoc along the coast, damaging crucial sections of the track — especially near Wilderness and the Kaaimans River bridge. Efforts to repair and restore were piecemeal and expensive. The aging infrastructure faltered. By 2010, the full George–Knysna service was formally discontinued.

What followed was years of hoping, planning, proposals and false starts. The Ghost of the Choo-Tjoe lingered in the memories of residents, rail enthusiasts, and Garden Route travellers alike.

The Big News: It will be Running Again

Here’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the Choo-Tjoe is officially set to run again. According to the official Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe update posted October 2025, Classic Rail has secured needed contracts and funding partners to rebuild the George – Knysna line and relaunch the steam train.

Key points from their announcement:

  • The restoration will proceed in two phases: Knysna → Sedgefield, then Sedgefield → George. The first phase is expected to take about 12 months.
  • Rolling stock (locomotives and carriages) are currently under repair and refurbishment. The plan is to establish a steam workshop along the route, and to road-haul the rolling stock to the Knysna–Sedgefield section to begin operations.
  • Before full service, the team will clear vegetation, survey bridges, and assess line condition as part of front-end engineering.
  • A ceremonial signature event is planned to celebrate this turning point in Garden Route tourism.
  • While bookings aren’t open yet, project updates and progress will be shared via their website and social media.

In short: the train is no longer a dream – it’s becoming a reality.

Why Its Return Is Bigger Than a Tourist Attraction

Economic & Regional Impact

This revival could spark a wave of sustainable tourism, pushing more travellers to linger in small towns along the route. Guesthouses, café owners, tour guides — many will benefit from renewed foot traffic.

Heritage & Identity

For locals, this is about reclaiming a piece of cultural memory. For visitors, it’s a chance to connect with South African rail history — alive and steaming once more.

Multi-Use Potential

Beyond tourism, a revived line might handle light freight or event services (e.g. dinner rides), increasing financial viability.

What’s Next & When You Can Ride

  • The Knysna → Sedgefield segment is slated for completion within 12 months from the start of restoration efforts.
  • Once cleared, the first public steam journeys will likely begin on that stretch.
  • Meanwhile, track-clearing and bridge surveys are already underway.

The Return of a Legend

The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe isn’t just going back – it’s coming back stronger. From devastation and silence, we’re headed toward steam, whistles, and unforgettable coastal journeys again. Can’t wait for that sound of the daily ‘choo-choo’ to roll over Knysna again.

When the train steams out of Knysna Station once more, it will carry more than passengers – it will carry hope, heritage and the spirit of the Garden Route!
