Attakwas Extreme Returns in 2027 – still South Africa’s Toughest One-Day MTB Race

The Attakwas Extreme, widely regarded as South Africa’s toughest one-day mountain bike race, will return in January 2027.

First staged in 2007, the Attakwas Extreme covers approximately 120 kilometres of remote Garden Route and Klein Karoo landscapes, including historic wagon routes and elephant paths through the Outeniqua Mountains. The race’s defining feature remains the infamous Attakwaskloof Pass, a steep, rocky climb that has become synonymous with the event’s reputation for brutality. Combined with January heat, dust, and relentless rolling terrain, the course is considered one of the most demanding marathon MTB events in the country.

The Attakwas Extreme finishes at Pine Creek Resort near Great Brak River, where completing the race is considered a significant achievement regardless of finishing position. Alongside the flagship Extreme distance, shorter Half and Mini events allow more riders to experience the atmosphere and terrain of this iconic race.

With its blend of history, endurance, and raw scenery, the Attakwas Extreme continues to stand out as a bucket-list event on the South African mountain biking calendar.
