The window goes down and the wind does the rest.
This is my happy place – and on this particular day, it unfolded just outside Riversdale in the Garden Route, on a quiet backroad heading east toward Albertinia.
Exploring the Garden Route Beyond the N2
Riversdale is often overlooked by travellers rushing along the N2, but pause here and you’ll discover a town rich in heritage, culture and access to some of the most beautiful rural scenery in the Western Cape.
After visiting Riversdale’s historic attractions – including the Old Jail and Versfeld House – we did what the Garden Route invites you to do best: slow down and explore.
No destination in mind.

Farmland, Rivers and the Langeberg Mountains
Crossing the Vet River, the landscape north of Riversdale opens wide. Rolling fields of lucerne and wheat stretch across gentle hills, dotted with dairy cattle and framed by the Langeberg Mountain range.
Here, the famous Sleeping Beauty of Riversdale becomes unmistakable.
From the N2, she’s a distant outline. From the backroads, she’s vivid and serene – lying on her back, face tilted toward the sun. The local Frisian cattle barely notice her anymore, but when we stop for a closer look, they approach cautiously, curious about these visitors interrupting their day.
Moments like these are why backroads matter.

The tar road soon gives way to gravel, and with it comes a deeper sense of connection to the land. This is where the Garden Route reveals its quieter side — far from tour buses, viewpoints and crowded attractions.

Earlier that day, we’d immersed ourselves in Riversdale’s more traditional tourist experiences. The afternoon, however, belonged to getting lost — intentionally.

As we followed the signs toward Albertinia, the scenery shifted once more. Lucerne fields faded, replaced by vast stretches of aloe ferox, signalling our approach to the Aloe Capital of the World — and the N2 beyond.
The day felt complete.

Route overview:
- Depart Riversdale on the Main Road toward Heidelberg
- Pass the Old Jail and continue north out of town
- Look left for the Sleeping Beauty of the Langeberg Mountains
- Continue as the road becomes gravel
- Turn right at the signposted junction for Albertinia
- Near town, follow the road left, looping behind Albertinia and rejoining the N2
