South Africa back to Adjusted Level 3 lockdown

As per midnight tonight, December 28, 2020, South Africa will go from Level 1 to Adjusted Level 3 lockdown nationwide. The President of the country, Cyril Ramaphosa announced this earlier tonight in a live address to the nation.

With the current number of infections getting close to 1 million, and a daily rate of infections of over 14,000 since Christmas Eve, more stringent measures had to be taken in order for the healthcare system to cope and lives to be saved.



Some of the main adjustments put in place:

  • All sales of alcohol will be prohibited;
  • Beaches, rivers, dams closed for recreational use;
  • Curfew to be in place between 21h00 / 9pm and 06h00;
  • Restaurants and bars to close at 20h00 / 8pm;
  • No big gatherings, social events, concerts etc. allowed. Max. 50 people to attend funerals;
  • Every individual is responsible for wearing a mask in public. Failure to do so can get you arrested, with fines and possible imprisonment of up to 6 months.

The regulations will come into effect at midnight today, until the 15th of January 2021.

The Garden Route remains a hotspot. In addition to this the following districts in the Western Cape have also been declared a hotspot: West Coast District, Overberg District, Winelands District, Cape Town and Central Karoo District.

Interprovincial travel as well as international travel remains open, but travel to hotspots should only be done if essential. Leisure travel to hotspots should be avoided.
