Strategy Regulations’ impact on tourism

Destination Garden Route - Summary lockdown Level 4

From tomorrow, May 1, 2020 South Africa will go from current Level 5 of National Lockdown to Level 4.  The different premiers of the different provinces will be able to influence moving different regions, districts and municipalities to different levels despite the overall, nationwide level.  Moving levels (both up and down) will depend on how ‘safe’ that particular area is. What is allowed under different levels outlined in the Risk Adjusted Strategy Regulations as published yesterday, April 29, 2020.

Time will tell how often and how fast movement between levels will happen.  It will make planning a tour or even just a weekend away very last minute (for friends and family – just ‘down the road’) or nearly impossible (for operators on behalf of (international) clients) for the time being.

Regular, leisurely movement between provinces is currently permitted when on Level 2. International borders (and air?) will only open again on Level 1.

As everybody is new to this situation it could of course be that the regulations still get adjusted as we go along. The published regulations can be found on SA Government‘s website and downloaded from here as well.
