5 May 2020
Africa’s Travel INDABA and Lilizela Awards cancelled.
Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, has confirmed that the 2020 Africa’s Travel Indaba and the annual Lilizela Awards have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Africa’s Travel Indaba 2020 was supposed to have taken place May 12 – 14, 2020, while the Lilizela Awards were scheduled for November of this year.
The Minister has been engaging with the tourism industry through a series of webinars and online meetings. In a recent webinar she said “based on the Covid-19 expected trajectory, the best-case scenario is that tourism sector recovery will only begin towards the end of this year.” The Minister added that the initial phase of recovery will be driven by domestic tourism, followed by regional tourism. International tourism is expected to recover in 2021.
No new dates for either Indaba or the Lilizela Awards have been announced at this point.
