MosJazz Festival 2019

MosJazz Festival 2019 Mosselbay

The 2nd annual MosJazz Festival took place from January 17 – 20, 2019, with 4 days of great musical line-up, perfect weather and happy people.  The kind of festival that is good for the heart and soul.

Set on the beach at The Bakke / Santos the last day of the festival saw an impressive line-up of local as well as international artists.  G-Minor, a well-known jazz band from Mosselbay with its roots in jazz and gospel aptly eased the public into the Sunday morning.  Next on stage was Lorne Erasmus, and although one could argue whether her repertoire could qualify as ‘jazz’, her smoothing voice definitely fit the bill.

All-time favourite Andrew Young hit the right notes, so to speak, not only with his own incredible sounds on saxophone, but also by sharing the stage with local jazz artists as his accompaniment.  When Zami Mdingi and her band were delayed in getting to the MosJazz Festival due to technical issues with their transport, the impromptu MosJazz Super Band was formed, with 17-year old local Caleb on sax stealing the show.  Zami and her band – even though with a  shortened performance – tried to get the audience into party mode but by then it was clear 4 days of jazz on the beach had started taking its toll from the audience.  Her authentic music, accompanied by her highly qualified and talented band, would probably have evoked a more enthusiastic response had she turned up earlier in the day.

The festival was ended by Phil Fearon, Jeodhouse and MeTime.  By then it was after 19h00 and the first festival goers had left to undertake the sometimes quite long way home.  The festival attracted thousands of people, mostly from the Western and Eastern Cape if Sunday’s live interviews with the audience by MC Charles Ford were anything to go by.

This year’s MosJazz Festival tickets ranged from R175 for a day ticket to R475 for the full 4 days of the festival;

At the time of publishing next year’s festival dates had not been released.  As soon as they will make sure to book your Mosselbay accommodation.  Bring friends and kids, pack the beach gear and cooler boxes and make a weekend out of it!  Whatever you do, don’t miss it!
